A recent cyberattack linked to the hacker group known as ShinyHunters disrupted operations at colleges and universities across the country, including Mississippi State University during final exam week.
The cyber incident affected Canvas, a widely used online learning management system that supports coursework, testing, and communication between students and faculty. As a result of the disruption, some students were temporarily unable to complete scheduled exams, forcing schools to adjust testing schedules and delay finals.
ShinyHunters is a cybercriminal group known for targeting organizations to steal sensitive data and disrupt digital operations. Reports indicate the breach may have compromised personal information belonging to as many as 275 million students and employees nationwide.
Canvas, the learning platform impacted by the attack, is used by more than 40% of colleges and universities in North America, making the disruption especially significant for higher education institutions.
Mississippi State University worked to restore operations and minimize the impact on students during the critical exam period.
Cybersecurity experts continue to monitor the situation as institutions review their systems and strengthen protections against future attacks.
