Magee Board of Alderman met Tuesday, September 28, 2018.
The meeting began with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Mayor Dale Berry requested the board make a decision and vote on the old jail site/community work center being leased to M.O.R.E. The center will house women paroles. A motion was made and the vote was 3-2 (Steele, Brown, & Brister in favor and Baker and Hickman against). The building will be leased for the sum of $2,500 in addition to M.O.R.E updating the building.
The mayor advised the city would be on pothole patrol September 20 and 21.
The city experienced a water break near Berry’s Fish House Tuesday causing several highway businesses to close due to no water. The leak has been fixed.
Trick or Treat in the city will be Wednesday, October 31st.
A discussion was held concerning purchasing 2 trucks. The Mayor is to call the reverse auction company and obtain price information.
City soccer will be played in Magee. The football program did not receive enough participants to offer football this year.
Building Inspector Joe Worrell discussed codes and guidelines for clean up of property and tearing down abandoned structures. Different variables are considered and must be met before the city can proceed with clean up of any area. The city is not ignoring the problem many factors must fall into place to allow clean up or destruction. According to Joe, “the process is slow and it takes time to see progress.” “The hard part is finding the owners,” state Joe.
Charlie Valadie Fire Marshal explained maintenance of the fire hydrants is necessary to keep our city safe. All hydrants will be checked. “When hydrants are flushed, citizens complain, but this is something that must be done to insure all fire hydrants have water,” said Joe.
Notification will be given through the media when the hydrants are tested.

Alderman Patrick Brown expressed his feelings on the need to set up a way the work force is accountable during the day. “With technology there are apps which allows better communication with the work force and city hall,” stated Brown.
Mayor Berry explained that with the prison closing we loss 25-30 % of our labor force.
Mayor Berry advised the city is working on a solution concerning the lighting at the walking track. Bids are being taken to determine the best price and solution. The mayor’s youth council will start with a new group Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at 5:30. Mayor advised the next two weekends will be very busy in the city of Magee due to ball tournaments at the Jimmy Clyde Sportsplex.
In Parks and Recreation, matters concerning the Sportsplex were discussed. Magee is hosting the MAIS State Championship in softball. Over 60 teams are expected to participate in the event over the next two weekends September 22nd and September 29th. A discussion is still ongoing between the city and school board in obtaining land the school owns near the old elementary. The city would like to purchase the 14 acres from the school board. A price or negotiation has not been reached by either party at this time.
