The commission was created in Public Law 106-79 in 1999 for the purpose of creating a memorial in Washington, D.C., honoring Dwight D. Eisenhower for his service to the nation in both his roles as President of the United States and as a great military leader.

The Eisenhower Memorial Commission consists of a bipartisan group of twelve commissioners:  four from the U.S. House of Representatives; four from the United States Senate; and four citizen commissioners appointed by the President of the United States. Senator Cochran was appointed to the commission by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Senator Roberts welcomed Senator Cochran to the commission:

“It’s an absolute pleasure to welcome my good friend, Thad Cochran, to the Eisenhower Memorial Commission. Those of us who have the honor of serving on the commission are charged with the important task of ensuring future generations of Americans learn about the remarkable legacy of a great President, and Kansas favorite son, Dwight D. Eisenhower. We look forward to having Senator Cochran alongside us as we begin construction of the memorial. The commission expects to break ground for the memorial this fall.”

Senator Cochran responded to Senator Roberts’ words of welcome:

“Dwight Eisenhower was one of the great heroes of my youth, and I am honored to be part of the effort to build a memorial honoring his life and legacy. The Commission was established to create a memorial to inspire future generations to emulate President Eisenhower’s dedication to public service, leadership, integrity, and devotion to American democratic values. I am committed to helping achieve that goal. It’s a privilege for me to join my friend Pat Roberts in this effort.”

EISENHOWER MEMORIAL COMMISSION: Created by Congress, the bipartisan commission includes eight members of Congress and four Presidential appointees. https://www.eisenhowermemorial.org/#/commission/mission
