Senator Chad McMahan offered words on his meeting with President Donald Trump in Tupelo, on November 1, 2019
I was notified on Friday, November 1, at 8:17 a.m. that I would be opening for the President in Tupelo, Mississippi, by leading the Pledge of Allegiance and offering a few words. I was nervous, but also excited and wanted to represent our state and region well.
I had no idea until 5:45 p.m., that my wife Nicky and I would have an opportunity to get a photo with the President and spend 3 minutes with him. I wanted to share some thoughts from the experience.
We were able to get a photo with the President but the Secret Service took the photo. You do not take your phone out or reach in your pockets while you are with the President.
The President was about one inch taller than I was and much broader. He had a very striking appearance but I could detect his humility. We spoke about Tupelo and Lee County and he asked me how I thought these were going in the region. He was very gracious and talked about how much he appreciated Mississippians and our traditional American Values. As we parted ways, he had some very kind remarks about Nicky.
It was an honor to meet him. To think that a boy born and raised in Tupelo, Mississippi, a factory worker, the son of a carpenter and a clerk, could serve as a state senator and have an opportunity to meet the President of the United States in my own Hometown. It was a remarkable moment and one that I will always cherish.
