I’ve known Joey for most of his life. He played baseball with my boys, and we spent many a hot afternoon together at the ballpark — cheering, sweating, and sharing those unforgettable “at bat” moments. Joey could throw a mean pitch. With her dark curly hair and bright smile was truly a beautiful kind little girl.
Life has a way of moving fast and scattering us in different directions. I knew Joey and Angel had faced hard battles with substance abuse. They fought long and hard but couldn’t seem to win — until the Lord stepped in. Today, both will tell you that God completely turned their lives around.
About two weeks ago, a friend called and asked me about a picture of Joey on Facebook that showed “MageeNews.com” as the source. I was baffled! When I looked, my heart sank — it was a post from 2012. How in the world did that resurface? Somehow, someone had Googled Joey’s name, clicked the old link, and the page went back into circulation like it was brand new.
Then came the messages — some kind, others harsh. People assumed I had reposted it. Wrong. I was horrified. I’ve known this family for years, and I immediately reached out. When I talked with Angel, she showed me nothing but grace. She said, “Miss Sue, I know you didn’t do that.” Then she added softly, “I know who did — it was the devil.”
Those words stopped me in my tracks. She was right. The devil would love nothing more than to drag up old pain and destroy new joy.
Angel and I talked for a long time that day — about their faith, their marriage, and the powerful change God has worked in their hearts. Something stirred in me, and I asked if they’d consider sharing their story. Honestly, I expected a “no.” Instead, Angel said, “Yes, we want to tell people what God has done.”
And that’s how this story — their Second Chance @ Bat — began.
