Jackson, MS—Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann has streamlined the sale of tax forfeited lands by implementing a new program to allow customers to purchase the property online.

“We hope the new portal will expedite the sale of what is drain on Mississippi’s economy,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann.

The new online system allows the public to search for available tax forfeited land, apply to purchase property, and pay application fees through an online payment portal.  Customers can check the status of their application by logging into the system.

In conjunction with the online system available to the public, Chancery Clerk’s will also be able to process tax forfeited parcels internally, expediting the sale of these lands.

“The new online system alleviates a duplication of efforts between State and local government,” adds Secretary Hosemann.  “It also drastically reduces the number of hours spent on manually inputting the information between both agencies.”

Currently, there are approximately 13,700 parcels forfeited to the State of Mississippi for a nonpayment of taxes.  The value of these lands is estimated at $84.6 Million.  Sixty-five percent (65%) of the forfeited properties are located in just five counties.  Those counties are Forrest, Hancock, Hinds, Pearl River, and Washington counties.

The new tax forfeited land application was developed internally by the Secretary of State’s Office.
