Simpson County Technical Center’s (SCTC) Law and Public Safety students recently received a special visit from an industry professional in law enforcement services.
Officer Lakarius Johnson, of the Wiggins Police Department, visited with students C to discuss his career as a police officer. A former student of SCTC’s Law and Public Safety instructor Brianne Kelly, Johnson discussed how his teacher supported and influenced him to successfully reach his goals of becoming a police officer. With Kelly’s guidance, he enrolled at the Police Academy in Camp Shelby and followed his dream.
“Mrs. Kelly’s enthusiasm was infectious. From the first day of class, she was always smiling and had boundless energy. She was no taskmaster, and there was no tough love, just excitement about what she could teach us. It never felt like she was teaching. It was as if she wanted to share all these really cool things related to law with you; it was effortless.” said Johnson. “Sharing her own passion, and engaging her classes, was ultimately contagious and inspiring. Her inspiration is what made me believe in myself and has led me to a career in law enforcement.”
Students listened in awe as Johnson spoke of his struggles and triumphs to become who he is today. He also spoke to students about the duties of protecting and serving the public. After his presentation, students were able to view Johnson’s patrol car, as they were taught the proper procedures to handcuff a suspect and the procedures to follow when making an arrest.
