SCTC Students Get Hands-on Training in Mass Casualty Simulation

On Friday, Oct. 29, health informatics and law and public safety students at Simpson County Technical Center (SCTC) put their skills to the test while participating in a simulated mass casualty incident.

Posing as either first responders, medical professionals or victims, approximately 50 students participated in a mass shooting scenario, which required them to carry out rescue efforts, injury assessments, and medical attention for victims suffering from varying levels of injury. The exercise took place on the SCTC campus and incorporated settings such as a crime scene, assessment area and trauma center.

“The purpose of the event was to teach students about a mass casualty incident, triage, how to handle an event that is large scale with lots of patients, and how it can overwhelm hospital systems,” said law and public safety instructor Brianne Kelly. “They did an awesome job for their first time.”

Portraying an emergency medical technician, Mendenhall High School freshman Madilyn Barron was seen carrying or transporting victims on gurneys toward a safety zone.

“We got to experience things that really happen,” said Barron. “We got a dip of what it would really be like.”

Assuming the role of a nurse, Magee High School junior Kaylee McWilliams said the simulation gave her an accurate depiction into the medical field.

“This was my first time ever doing this, and it gave me a real insight of what actually happens at a hospital when they do have a mass casualty,” said McWilliams. “I really enjoyed it.”

SCTC is a dedicated, caring, multi-dimensional learning community with a mission of providing quality educational opportunities that prepare learners to succeed by offering unique student-centered programs utilizing a creative well-trained staff, challenging curriculum and state of the art resources.
