SCTC Student Wins Third Place at State HOSA Conference for Her Clinical Skills

Simpson County Technical Center (SCTC) student Mattyson Hall represented well at the 2022 Future Health Professionals (HOSA) State Conference in Jackson, placing third in her competitive event.

A health sciences student at SCTC, Hall won third place in the Clinical Specialty event for showcasing substantial skill and knowledge in a health career of her choosing: anesthesiology. Because of her win, Hall will advance to the International HOSA Conference in June, which will be held in Nashville, Tenn., at the Opryland Resort.

For this event, Hall had to learn how to insert an IV for administration of medication for anesthesia, create a video showcasing her skill, develop a rubric to follow that skill, and submit a research paper on nurse anesthetists. Hall interviewed and job shadowed a certified nurse anesthesiologist at Magee General Hospital for one day to prepare herself for this event.

“I am very proud of Mattyson for competing against so many HOSA students from across the state,” said Brenda White, SCTC’s HOSA adviser. “Placing third is a great accomplishment during any year but especially spinning off another year of a pandemic.”

The Clinical Specialty event provides HOSA members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills about a health career of their choosing. The event aims to inspire members to learn more about a health-related career and become skilled future health professionals.

HOSA is a national student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education Division of ACTE. HOSA’s two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.
