(Released by the Simpson County District Office)
On Thursday, Sept. 28, the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) released accountability grades for Mississippi public schools for the 2022-23 school year.
According to the newly released data, Simpson County School District grew by 1.75 percent, maintaining a grade of “C.” This is the second consecutive year, since COVID, the district has maintained a Level C status, going from an overall accountability rating of 573 to 583. This 10-point increase makes the district only 16 points away from achieving a Level B status.
The accountability grades for the 2022-23 school year shows that SCSD and five of its schools — including both high schools, both elementary schools and Simpson Central School — are among 87% of schools and 91% of districts in Mississippi to be rated a C or higher. According to MDE, the grades are an improvement from 2021-22 accountability data, when approximately 81% of schools and 87% of districts were rated a C or higher.
Other key highlights from the accountability data showed that —
· Magee High School went from a Level D to a Level B status school, growing significantly by 91 points;
· Mendenhall High School maintained a Level B status, growing by 29 points;
· Magee Elementary School maintained a Level C status, growing by 37 points — only four points shy of earning a Level B status; and
· Magee Middle School and Mendenhall Jr. High School went from Level F schools to Level D schools, with Mendenhall Jr. High growing by 51 points and Magee Middle growing by 25 points.
The 2022-23 Accountability Performance Results for SCSD and all its schools are as follows:
· Overall District – C
· Magee High School – B
· Mendenhall High School – B
· Magee Elementary School – C
· Mendenhall Elementary School – C

“Simpson County School District is on a forward trajectory toward becoming a B district,” said Superintendent Paul Lawrence. “I am proud of our students and our educators for their hard work and commitment, and I am excited about the future. We will continue to work diligently and make all the necessary improvements for the betterment of our students, district and community.”
Mississippi’s schools and districts are graded annually on an A-F scale. These grades are part of the state’s accountability system, which helps teachers, school leaders, parents and communities know how well their local schools and districts are serving their students.
