Simpson County School District (SCSD) is proud to announce that two of its schools were recently selected as recipients of the Program of Research and Evaluation for Public Schools (PREPS) Growth Award.

The PREPS Award recognizes schools who have demonstrated growth on the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP), which measures students’ achievement in English, math, science and history, even during the pandemic.

Magee High School received the Algebra I Growth Award for having 33 percent of its students measured as proficient and advanced during the 2021-22 School Year. In 2018-19, only 10 percent of Algebra I students were proficient and advanced. Algebra I is taught by teacher Kristy Thurman.

Mendenhall High School received the Biology I Growth Award for having 43 percent of its students measured as proficient and advanced during the 2021-22 School Year. In 2018-19, only 33 percent of Biology I students were proficient and advanced. Biology I is taught by teacher Katelynn Foster.

“We are very proud of these two innovative teachers for making such a significant increase in the proficiency level of their students,” said Dr. Deirdre Randall, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. “We look forward to how they will continue to grow our students in the years ahead.”

Both schools were presented with certificates during the regular SCSD Board Meeting held on Thursday, March 10.
