Those of you that have followed this blog thus far know that music is a big part of my life.
Music can make you happy, make you sad, make you smile or make you cry.
Music can also help in a variety of different situations. Even when you’re trying to come up with the right words to say to a special person but you’re a little bit shy.
Such was my situation while I was a freshman in college.
There was a young lady that I had an interest in , however she had no interest in me. No matter how hard I tried she would always shoot me down.
Then it occurred to me, if I couldn’t say the right thing then maybe a song could do it for me.
My next mission was to find out one of her favorite songs. I was fortunate enough to gather this information from one of her best friends.
I was surprised to learn that one of her favorite tunes was “Stars” from Dan Fogelberg’s Home Free album.
My friend Tony agreed to teach me to play this song on guitar. Now I had never played guitar in my life and knew nothing about it. But Tony said it was easy and he was confident that he could teach me.
Well lucky for me ,the song only had a few basic chords to learn but it still took time and a lot of practice.
I practiced with Tony every afternoon for about two weeks just to be able to play this one song. I practiced until I thought my fingers would bleed.
Then the moment came when I felt I was ready. Tony , along with some of her friends that were in on it by now, lured the young lady to the Fine Arts building. There I was, waiting on stage , sitting on a wooden stool with Tony’s guitar on my knee.
As she walked closer , I began to play and sing this Dan Fogelberg song.
When I got to the end, she just stood there and cried. She told me that it was the sweetest thing anyone had ever done for her.
We dated after that for several dates but the spark never grew. I still love the song and play the album often.
I wonder sometimes if she ever listens to the song anymore. I also wonder if she ever thinks back to a shy young college boy with a little bit of talent and a whole lot of courage.
