Saints Win Tough Game Versus Amiteimage1(13) image2(9)

By: Melissa Grace

There was a lot of anticipation coming into Friday night’s matchup between Prentiss Christian and Amite School Center. The past two seasons have seen the Saints win some close games against the Rebels who were district rivals. With realignment they are no longer in the same conference, but the competition is just as fierce. The Rebels won the coin toss and elected to defer to the 2nd half. Amite attempted an onside kick, but the Saints were on their toes as Ned Sanders scooped up the ball at the PCS 14 yard line. After a loss on first down, Blake Greenlee made a good run on second down, but a fumble on third down was recovered by the Rebels on the ASC 48 yard line. The Rebels moved down to the PCS 12 yard line, but the Saint defense stiffened and forced a turnover on downs at the Saint 16 yard line. A goods series of runs by Greenlee, Austin Daughdrill and Mikey Goddard moved the ball to the 12 yard line of the Rebels, but the Saints were unable to convert a 4th and 2 and turned the ball over on downs. The Rebels eased out to the 26 yard line, but a big sack by Sanders on 3rd down forced a Rebel punt from their 12 yard line. Prentiss blocked the punt, but it was scooped up by the punter who scrambled out to the Saint 40 yard line earning a fresh set of downs. The new drive only gained 1 yard and the Rebels were once again in a punting situation. The ASC punt was taken by Eric Powell at the 11 yard line and returned 1 yard to the 12. Runs by Daughdrill moved the ball to the 30 yard line, but a couple of incomplete passes forced a Prentiss punt on 4th and 4. Greenlee’s punt sailed 45 yards with no return as time expired on the 1st quarter. The Rebels were only able to gain 1 yard on their drive and elected to punt from the ASC 26 yard line. The Amite punt flew 27 yards with no return. The Saint drive moved up to the Rebel 41, but would stall there forcing another Greenlee punt. The punt was well placed as it rolled out of bounds on the Rebel 3 yard line. ASC got the ball out to the 30 yard line, but were unable to convert a 4th and 2 attempt. Prentiss would regain possession on the Rebel 31 yard line. Facing a 3rd and 13 from the ASC 23 yard line, Greenlee found Michael Goddard on a 23 yard TD pass. The PAT by Josh Daley was good giving PCS a 7-0 with 5:08 to play in the 1st half. Following a 5 yard illegal procedure on the kickoff, Daley’s kick went 42 yards and was abruptly covered by the kickoff team at the Rebel 28. The Rebels were able to move the ball to the 40 yard line, but with time expiring on the half elected to let the clock run out.

PCS had to kick off to ASC to start the 2nd half. Daley’s kick went out of bounds and was brought out to the 35 yard line. The Rebels were able to gain 14 yards but could not convert a 4th down attempt and turned the ball over on downs to Prentiss at the 49 yard line. A series of incompletions led to another Saints punt. The fair catch was muffed by the Rebels and recovered by Hunter Sutton on the 12 yard line of ASC. With a new set of downs, the Saints wasted no time finding the end zone. On 2nd down, Daughdrill pounded the ball in from 10 yards out. Daley’s PAT was no good keeping the score at 13-0 with 7:45 to play in the 3rd quarter. Daley’s kickoff again rolled out of bounds starting the Rebels on the 35 yard line again. A good pass by the Rebels quickly got the ball into Saints territory before the defense shut down their offense and stifled a 4th and 9 attempt. With momentum on their side, the Saints put together a 12 play 61 yard drive capped off by a 9 yard run by Powell for a touchdown. Daley’s PAT was good giving Prentiss a chance to breathe with a 20-0 lead at the :27 mark in the 3rd quarter. Daley’s kick was well covered and the tackle was made at the 23 yard line. A 5 yard penalty moved the Rebels back to the 13 yard line. The Rebels connected on a good pass to the 44 yard line, but would go no farther. On 3rd and 11, Daughdrill intercepted the Rebel pass and returned it 45 yards for a Saint touchdown. The Daley PAT was good giving Prentiss a 27-0 lead with 11:04 to play in the game. Daley kicked off for 45 yards, but was returned 23 yards to the Saint 38 yard line. Amite worked their way to the PCS 42 yard line where they fumbled the ball into the hands of Daley. At this point, the Saints chose to play all of their player varsity players. Prentiss moved the ball down to the 46 yard line before fumbling the ball back to the Rebels on the 49 yard line. The Saints defense shut down the Rebel s one more time as the game ended. The Saints travel to Sylva Bay this week to face their first district opponent of the season.
