Robert Earl McNair was born in Covington County on Tuesday October 31, 1939 the fifth child of six children born to the late Estus and Sally Gowen McNair. Bob was reared in the Mount Pleasant Community,  He attended Lincoln Elementary and graduated from Carver High School where he was President of his graduating class.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from Alcon State University.  He was honorably discharged from the United States Army.

Bob and Martha Wilson McNair had four children:  Barbara, Brenda, Donald, and Douglas.

Bob began his teaching career at McLaurin High School in Rankin County. He then taught at Carver High School and Collins High School.

In 1988 he was elected to the Board of Aldermen of Mt Olive. Robert Earl McNair became the first African American Mayor of Mt Olive.  He served until his retirement in June 30, 2017.  The Mt Olive Senior Citizen Center was dedicated in his honor.

Cherishing his memory is his wife, Martha; children:  Tammy Gray Ellis of Sacramento, CA; Michael Norwood Dexter (Mayonie)Taylor of Pearl, MS; Jerry McCoy, Douglas (Kenyoda) McNair of Philadelphia, MS; Rodney (Lisa) Cooper of Mt Olive; fourteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a sister and special niece ; adopted son; a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. 

Robert Earl McNair died March 23, 2022.
