Response to Associated Press Article on Voters With Disabilities
JACKSON, Miss – In light of a recent article published by the Associated Press (AP), please see below for the full statement issued by the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office to their correspondent on April 1, 2023:
“Mississippi is a bottom-up state, meaning most of the elections work is done at the local level. Ensuring ADA compliance in localized polling places lies with each county and the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office does not have enforcement authority. Whether the designated polling places are county-owned or privately-owned, the counties are responsible for ensuring that the polling places they have selected are ADA compliant. Our office has always worked and will continue to provide assistance and advice to local election officials on best practices for aiding our disabled voters and have communicated these efforts to Disability Rights Mississippi on multiple occasions. Through an initial meeting in 2020 with DRM and further correspondence, we kept it apprised of our efforts to assist ADA voters. We welcome further conversations and dialogue as we move towards the 2023 election. We stand committed to ensuring all Mississippians are able to safely and securely cast a vote and have their voices heard.”
