RALEIGH DEFEATS TROJANS ON SENIOR NIGHT
Pregame all the senior football players, cheerleaders and band members were honored with families by their sides. One night of celebration doesn’t seem enough for the countless hours these young people have spent practicing to represent their school and city. Don’t forget the time that parents and families spent transporting them to practice and following them across the state. Congratulations to the seniors and their families!
Raleigh is ranked #1 in 3A for a reason. Their star and Ole Miss commit, Suntarine Perkins, is a special player. They earned the 40-15 win over the Trojans. However, there are many things that don’t show in the box score that help to tell another side of the game. Magee had a fumble inside the Lions 5, a bad snap on a punt, a dropped 50 yard TD pass, numerous false starts, just to name a few. The Trojans had a good game plan on offense and the defense came up with some big plays, but inconsistency hurt the Red and Gray. Give Raleigh credit. They took advantage of most every mistake and continued their perfect record in the district.
Raleigh jumped out to a 12-0 lead with a balance attack and big runs by Perkins and Kyvryn Moncrief. One of the touchdowns was a result of the bad snap on a Trojan punt that set the Lions up inside the red zone. On the next Raleigh drive, the Trojans Defense would come up big and stop the Lions inside the red zone. The Trojans offense then found life. Big passing plays from QB, Tristan Newsome, to Kyerston Tucker and J’Kwon Gregory along with a pass interference call set the Trojans up at the Lions’ 29-yard line. An outstanding pass play from Newsome to Demichael Green would set the Trojans up with first and goal on the 1-yard line. After a false start, Braeden Gregory would run the wildcat to perfection and the Trojans were on the board. Gavyn Chafin added the PAT and Magee trailed 12-7.
One of those plays not appearing in the box score happened on the next Raleigh drive. The Trojans had Raleigh with a third and long and were poised to get the ball back before halftime and possibly take the lead. However, the defense would lose containment on Raleigh QB, Jacob Bowen, and he scampered for the first down. Perkins would later score for the Lions. After the 2-point conversion, it was 20-7 Raleigh. They would carry the momentum into the locker room.
At the half, the high school would honor the many students who scored advanced on their state tests and for perfect attendance. These young people are often overlooked in our community. It was good to celebrate these students.
The Trojans looked to take momentum back in the second half. A great angled kick by Chafin would pin the Lions back. The Trojans Defense would come up with a big play when Darian Woods forced a fumble recovered by DaQuon Levy. But, it would be another lost opportunity for the Trojans when the failed the convert on a 4th down play. Raleigh would take advantage again when Perkins scored. PAT was good. You see the theme for the night? It could have been 20-14 Lions, but instead it was 27-7. It happened again on the next possession for the Trojans. The Trojans would drive to the Lions’ 6-yard line, and then fumble. Instead of 27-14, it became 33-7 Lions after another Perkins’ score. Raleigh would fake punt up 33-7 with 5:45 left in the game and would score again to go up 40-7. On the kickoff, Levy would show the determination you like to see with a great return to set the Trojans up in scoring position. Braeden Gregory would punch it in for the Trojans. A 2-point pass play from Newsome to Tucker would make the final score 40-15.
Magee looks to bounce back in district play this Friday at Wesson, 7:00 p.m. start. The Cobras can really score and it will be a challenge for the Trojans. If the Trojans can learn to play consistent for four quarters, they can get hot going into the playoffs. Let’s also be reminded again, these are 15 to 18 year old’s working hard every day to represent their school and city. They need your encouragement and support to help them respond in a positive way to adversity and not give up. These are life lessons that go far beyond the game of football.
