Price Wallace wore two hats at the Tuesday, September 3, 2024 Simpson County Board of Supervisors meeting— one as a poultry farmer and one as a Representative.
Mr. Wallace questioned the increase in poultry taxes that goes in effect this year. According to Wallace, the action can be delayed by the Supervisors. “I don’t get a pay raise each year, “stated Wallace. The cost of food production and equipment has skyrocketed. “Hold up on poultry tax increase…give us some time,” plead Price.
The Board discussed the issue but expressed this issue was created in the legislature and would need to go back to the legislature for clarity.
All Supervisors were present for the meeting which was called to order by President Mitchell Chapman. The Pledge of Allegiance followed.
Chancery Clerk Tim Gray presented the following matters for recording in the Board minutes:
Tammy Layton of the County Extension Office informed the Board of the continuing education her office is doing in educating making wise choices in food decisions. Her office visits all county schools presenting programs on the importance of correct food choices.
Road Manager Ben Warren informed the Board his crews were cleaning out gutters and clearing ditches. Board member Donny Welch brought up the stealing of Road Signs and what could be done to prevent this occurrence. “Road sign stealing is a problem in the county,” stated Warren. “A lot of signs get stolen,” Warren continued. The supervisors discussed putting game cameras on certain sign that are repeatedly stolen.
Greg Bonds, County engineer, told the board progress is being made on New Hope Road, Peacock Road as well as clean up on Dry Creek Road. Work continues creating ordinance drafts.
Sheriff Paul Mullins submitted the following report:
Tax assessor Jamie Brewer reminded the public tax increases are coming to real property in the next year. The increase has been phased in with Real Property the last on the list. The increase will be 45%.
No decision was made on finalizing information for the surplus sale to be held in October. A list for items to be auctioned will be available at a later date.
County Administrator Eric Bowen gave the following report:
Attorney Danny Welch gave his report which dealt with language in several contracts.
