The senior pastor at First Baptist Church Natchez, Doug Broome will serve as keynote speaker at Mississippi College’s summer commencement.
Ceremonies on the Clinton campus are set for 10 a.m. Saturday August 5 at the A.E. Wood Coliseum.
Dr. Broome is serving his second year as president of the Mississippi Baptist Convention. The Magnolia State is home to more than 700,000 Baptists.
“I just want to be sensitive to the needs of Baptists across the state,” Broome said following his selection. “I want to show them support and minister to them and with them.”
A longtime Baptist leader, he served as chairman of the Mississippi Baptist Convention’s executive committee in 2014-15. He also chaired its Christian Action Committee for two years.
The Mississippian spent more than three decades in pastoral ministry. His first full-time position in the ministry was at Pearlhaven Baptist Church in Brookhaven in 1983.
A graduate of the former Clarke College in Newton and Mississippi College, Broome earned his master’s and doctorate of ministry at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He pastored at Calvary Baptist Church Waynesboro and First Baptist Church Yazoo City before being called to serve in Natchez in March 2008.
An avid reader, runner and cyclist, Broome excelled as a track and cross country coach at three high schools. His teams won two state championships and finished as runner-up four times. An accomplished runner, Broome is a former triathlete. Doug showcased his skills as a cyclist on a mixed relay triathlon team that’s won several races across Mississippi.
Growing up in Mississippi, he attended high school in Terry and lettered in five sports.
Broome remains active in his historic community along the Mississippi River in such events as Angels on the Bluff and Historic Natchez Tableaux.
Broome and his wife, Gwenette, are the parents of one adult son, Bradley, of Flowood. Gwenette is a former teacher, tennis coach and church staff member. The couple owns and operates a cattle farm in Philadelphia, Mississippi.
