Charlie and I decided to take a little “Out and About” tour today—checking in on people and places that make Magee special.
Our first stop was Hand’s Nursery, where I visited with the ever-knowledgeable Linda Pruitt. Linda is truly the guru of all things growing, and she’s always happy to share her expertise. Today’s topic? Hydrangeas! Did you know you can cut the dead blooms off a limelight hydrangea, and it may bloom again? Now is the perfect time to prune. Linda also showed me a beautiful shrub that stays colorful all winter long. She mentioned this has been one of her busiest summers ever.
Next, we swung by the City Park to check on progress. Plenty is happening—trees have been limbed up, the old fence torn down, and flower beds dug out. The transformation is well underway, but there’s no official opening date just yet.
Our third stop was the Magee Police Station, where Chief Denis Borges took time for a sit-down chat. He emphasized two important things: know whose yard you’re rolling, and always wear your seat belt—you don’t want a ticket! We also got a look at the department’s fingerprint machine, which was purchased through a grant before Chief Borges took office. The machine is much more efficient than the old method and connects directly to a national database, reducing wait times for results to nearly zero.
Finally, we visited the City Jail. At the time, four inmates were housed there—though, of course, we didn’t get to see them. The walls? Pink! When I asked why, Chief Borges explained that pink is considered a calming color, which might help encourage a little peace and quiet. The jail was also impressively clean.
So, where should Charlie and I head next on our “Out and About” adventures?
