I’m always interested in how people remember 9/11 and where they were. My son Larkin had been dead about a month, and I remember standing in the Magee Post Office, unable to wrap my head around the news—my world already so shattered that it was hard to take in others’ pain. Still, those moments bind us. Please share your stories with me—email me—and let’s remember together. We must never forget.

On this night, September 10, 2001 … 24 years ago:
246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights.
2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning.
343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift.
60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol.
8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift.
None of them saw past 11:00am Sept 11, 2001.
In one single moment life may never be the same. As you live and enjoy the breaths you take today and tonight before you go to sleep in preparation for your life tomorrow, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted.

I was working in Downtown Chicago. By the time l left work a couple hours later, the city was a ghost town. There were warning about the subway and I knew if I took The El( elevated train) we had a stop at The Merchandise Mart, so I opted to walk home. Took a little over an hour walking along the lakeshore. We lived near Wrigley Field and the fight path to O’Hare went over us. It was so quiet not hear the planes approaching for landing. 2 days later were sitting on the front stoop of our brownstone and random strangers stopped and asked if the could join us for our vigil. The unity you felt with strangers was amazing. I never want to experience a 9/11 ago, but I long for the closeness of the days after.
