Piff Vinson, founder and long time owner of the Country Printer, passed away at the Jackson VA Home Saturday night. Mr. Piff is survived by his wife Delores, son Robert of Magee, and precious daughter Karen of Collins.
Piff served as a Magee Alderman for years…I don’t even know how many. He was very progressive in his thinking and always wanted the best for the city and its people.
Piff was a very good friend of my mama and daddy. I believe my mother and Piff graduated from Magee High School together …but not sure…I just know they were friends. My mother always spoke so highly of Piff. She had the utmost respect for Piff and Delores. His son Robert, who now owns and operates The Country Printer, and I graduated in 1968 from Magee High School…and little sister Karen was always present in my life!
Again, Magee has lost a fine man.
Robert “Piff” Vinson was 92 years old and a World War II veteran. He was a Coast Guardsman on an LSt activated in the Navy seeing action in the Philippines and Japan often coming under fire as he delivered troops ashore in hostile actions on amphibious landing craft.
When the city of Magee began a Veteran’s Day celebration, who I always thought of was Mr. Piff. Through the years, I saw his collection and heard his war stories…he was a true veteran to me!
Piff and Delores have lived in the same house as long as I can remember…across the street from the First Baptist Church playground. For years, The Country Printer was located behind the Vinson home.
As arrangements become available, I will post.
Piff gave not only to his country and family…but his love for Magee was evident in his devotion to promoting our city.
The family has requested no visitors on Sunday, November 1st. We can all understand…they are very very tired.
