A group of local tennis players will travel to Mobile, AL to compete in the southeast sectionals tennis tournament, with a trip to nationals on the line should they win the Mobile tournament.
The team, captained by Johnny White of Mendenhall, competed in the Pine Belt regionals during the fall of 2015. Competing against teams from Laurel and Hattiesburg, the Simpson County team posted a 6-0 record to advance to the state championships.
During cold and blustery weather in November, the team competed against teams from all over the state, including Jackson, Gulf Coast, the Delta and North Mississippi. Again, the Simpson County team managed to win all of their matches and were named state champs.
The next step is the tournament in Mobile. The Simpson team has been grouped with the winners from Georgia, South Carolina, and Kentucky. Should they advance, they would face the winner of the Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama and Tennessee grouping. The overall winner will advance to the National Championship.
The team is sponsored by the Simpson County Tennis Association, a member of the USTA. The SCTA sponsors various men’s, women’s and youth teams through different levels of league play.
