The Simpson County School Board adopted a new “No Meal Charged” policy during their regular school board meeting, May 9, 2019. Going forward, no Simpson County School student will be allowed to charge a meal. The policy is being adopted due to state law which states no student can charge school meals.

Local Technical Students were recognized during regular board meeting. Calen Easterling placed 1st in HOSA Writing division. Kolby Polk placed first in Cabinet Making.

Dr. Bo Huffman presented the District Summary Report for the Technical Center. The board recognized Dr. Huffman for going above and beyond with his work at the Technical Center.

Magee’s Mayor Dale Berry, Alderman Patrick Brown, and Park Director David Dunn, met before the board to discuss an inter-local agreement for property located by the old Magee Elementary School. The agreement is an exchange of expenses for Magee High School playing baseball at the Sportsplex. Although the board was open to the agreement, the men were  asked  to bring a proposal back in writing at the next board meeting on June 13, 2019.

Magee Middle School Principal Tracye Pierre met before the board to give an update on how the middle school was progressing with testing and test preps. Magee Middle School is showing growth in reading and math. State test scores are not just graded on test alone other factors go into the overall score. Some of those factors are: test scores, student attendance, growth and discipline. It is imperative that students attend school and have good behavior. Absences and discipline affect the school in their overall grading.  Magee Middle School is rewarding students for positive behavior, attendance, and classwork.

Mendenhall Junior High Assistant Principal Nick Lee updated the board on the schools progression. Mendenhall Jr. High is showing improvement in all areas. The school should receive credit for growth during the scoring process. Teachers and administration are working hard each day as they instruct students and identify deficiencies. Teachers plan intervention instructions according to student needs.

The following travel agenda was approved.  Brook Jones, Taylor White, and Magee Middle Cheerleaders requested permission to attend UCA Cheer Camp at USM, June 3-6, 219. Trip is paid for with funds from parents.

Damille Darden and Magee High School FFA requested permission to attend MS FFA State Convention, June 2-6, 2019 in Starkville, MS.

Amy White, Judy Byrd, Keri McRaney, and gifted classes from Mendenhall Jr. High, Mendenhall Elementary and Simpson Central requested permission to travel to Disney World, March 6-11, 2020 to participate in Disney’s Youth Educational Programs. Parents and fundraisers pay for trip.

Rhonda Berry requested permission to attend the Summer MASS Conference, July 9-12, 2019 in Biloxi, MS. Trip is paid for with district funds.

Misty Hanna requested permission to attend the MS Association of Federal Education Program Directors Conference, June 25-28, 2019 in Jackson, MS. Trip paid for with federal funds.

Deia Sanders requested permission to attend Eureka Math Summer Institute, June 3-6, 2019 in New Orleans, La. Trip is paid for with federal funds.

Patricia Braddock and Simpson County Technical Center FFA student’s requested permission to attend State FFA Convention, June 2-6, 2019 in Starkville, MS. Trip is paid for with FFA funds.

Jo Ann Floyd requested permission to attend National Skills Competition, June 23-29, 2019 in Louisville, KY. Trip is paid for with Simpson County Technical Center Skills funds.

Debbie Davis and Lana Stephens requested permission to attend Making Connections Conference, June 5-7, 2019 in Biloxi, MS. Trip is paid for with Federal funds.

The board approved to obtain bids for consideration of resurfacing Mendenhall High School parking lot and bid for re-roofing Simpson County Technical Center.  Jeffery Walker, Maintenance-Transportation Director, made the recommendations.

16th Section bids were open and approved.

Superintendent Greg Paes acknowledge the recent tragic death of  Magee High School Students Ladamian Ducksworth.  Condolence and prayers were asked for the family. Paes congratulated Dakiya Walker of Magee High School who placed first in the state in 300-meter hurdles winning state 3-A title. Paes was granted permission by the board to obtain bids for caution lights at Hwy 28 and Simpson Central.
Deputy Superintendent Debbie Davis presented the newly released MKAS Kindergarten Scores. Attached is a chart showing scores and growth for all kindergartens in Simpson County School District. 

Magee High School graduation is set for Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at Trojan Field weather permitting. The ceremony will start at 8:00 p.m. In case of bad weather, graduation will be moved to the auditorium. Tickers are required for graduation. Mendenhall High School will graduate Thursday, May 23, 2019 at Tiger Field weather permitting. In case of rain, graduation will be moved to the gym. The ceremony is to take place at 8:00 p.m.

No further business meeting was recessed to go into executive session to discuss student discipline.

The next board meeting is June 13, 2019.
