Simpson County Board of Supervisors accepted the registration of Justice Court Judge Eugene Knight effective June 30, 2018. A special election will be November 6th.
The board has 10 days to appoint a successor until a special election can be held.
The board had four candidates who were interested in the position come before the board:
Alan Floyd, Tracy Brown, Whit Fortenberry, and Charles Seville.
Each Candidate introduced themselves and explain why they should be considered for the position.
After each one spoke, Mikey Berry made a motion to appoint Seville as Judge and Danny Craft second the motion. After discussion Curtis Skiffer said he was not ready to make a decision and would like a little more time to consider the best candidate. In a 2-3 vote, Skiffer, Brian Kennedy, and Randy Moore against, the motion to hire Seville failed. A motion was then made to table the decision until Monday, July 9, 2018 at 2:00 pm for a special called meeting to make a decision on who to appoint for the vacant position. All were in favor.
In other business Bridge inspections over the last year cost approximately $45,000,000 in state aid money over two years. This is the money the county uses to do repairs on state aid projects. A second round of inspections will be coming later in the year. County Engineer Buddy Woolvertoon advised the Mt. Zion to Shivers project needed to be re-programed form state aid funds to county funds due to no funds available in state aid. Engineer Woolverton advised the bridge at Sharon Saratoga needed new piling. A bridge rehabilitation project was approved. The cost of this project is $125,000.00.
