Cancers of the colon and rectum have become less common in older adults over the years thanks to increased screening and early preventive measures. But the rate of colorectal cancer among younger adults, which has historically been very low, is now increasing. Adults under 50 in the U.S. are now four times more likely to develop colorectal cancer than they would have in the 1950s. Based on this evidence, the American Cancer Society and other health organizations now recommend a first screening for colorectal cancer at age 45, and even earlier for those who may be at higher risk. Being overweight, having an unhealthy diet, and having a family history of colon or rectal cancer can all increase your risk.
