Today I had the opportunity to attend a Naloxone (Narcan) training session offered by the Mississippi Department of Mental Health and I wanted to share some of what I learned with the citizens of Magee. When we think of overdoses a lot of us think of Fentanyl, Heroin and other illegal drugs, but most of our prescribed pain medications are also opioids. In fact, Mississippi is 5th in the nation of prescription narcotics being written. Mississippi is also ranked very high in overdose deaths. That is why the Mississippi Department of Mental Health has a program that will give our citizens free Naloxone (Narcan) training and medication to keep in their homes. The free training and medication can be obtained by going to ODFREE.org, once there you will get free training on when and how to use the Naloxone (Narcan). During the training one thought that had never occurred to me was having this medication in our elderly parents and grandparents’ homes in case of accidental over-medication. In conclusion, I would like to thank Charlotte Bryant with the Mississippi Department of Mental Health for taking the time to give me this training.
Sincerely,
Investigator Bryan Green
