JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. — A Jackson County grand jury has determined that no criminal charges are warranted in the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells.
Wells disappeared while celebrating the Fourth of July with friends on islands off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. His body was recovered near Horn Island two days later.
After hearing testimony from 43 witnesses and reviewing physical and digital evidence, police reports, interviews, videos and the autopsy findings, the grand jury concluded that the circumstances were consistent with drowning.
The report found no evidence that Wells was involved in an argument or physical altercation. Bruising discovered on the back of his head was not considered fatal, and a witness reported seeing him slip from a boat before continuing to socialize.
The grand jury found no credible evidence that anyone traveling to or from the island engaged in criminal conduct connected to Wells’ death.
