Music lovers are invited to see some of the region’s finest musicians perform one of the best works of Mozart at Mississippi College.

The January 20 program is part of the Sclater Chamber Music Series named in honor of award-winning composer James Sclater. The Clinton resident is a retired MC music professor and longtime mentor to many outstanding musicians.

Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1787, “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” is the title of the classical piece that translates into “Little Serenade.”

The Friday concert at the Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall in the Aven Fine Arts Building on the Clinton campus begins at 7:30 p.m.

The splendid lineup of performers includes violinists Vince Massimino and Milena Rusanova of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Ausra Jasineviciute on viola and cellist Veronica Parrales, both from the Jackson-based orchestra, round out the talented group.

There’s more entertainment in store for the audience that evening. Featured will be a percussion ensemble playing the piece “Escapades” written by modern composer John Williams. The musical selection comes from the hit movie “Catch Me If You Can.”

Members of the group include Mississippi College music professors Craig Young on alto saxophone and Tyler Kemp on piano. Others in the percussion ensemble include Paul Heindl, Jason Mathena, Owen Rockwell and Craig Goreth, plus Richard Brown on double bass.

Concert tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for students from any school. The MC Music Department is the event sponsor. The program is the first concert in the MC series in the new year.

Tickets can be purchased online at mc.edu/marketplace. The Music Department’s Dottie Serio can be reached at 601-925-3440 for more details about upcoming Sclater chamber concerts in 2017.
