Bats continue to be a problem at Magee Elementary. According to Maintenance and Transportation Director Jeffrey Walker, the bat removal should take about three more days. Although there are no visible bats at this time, Walker and his crew are continuing to secure and seal any areas presenting a problem.
“The bats are not “flying” in the cafeteria…they are in the ceiling area,” stated Walker. Walker said the bats are of no health concern at this point…but he wants them gone.
The areas must be sealed off then allow time for the exit of the bats. According to the exterminator who is working with Walker, “if this had happened in the summer time there would be a quick fix…but the “cold” spell sent the bats in to find a warm area and the cafeteria was perfect for the 2 1/2-inch-long mammals.
Walker explained that everyone in the school system from Coach Paes to the bus drivers to the cafeteria workers and of course the teachers have pulled together to find a solution and a workable situation during this time. The elementary children are bused to the middle school and high school cafeterias for meals. “700 children were transported and fed within about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The elementary cafeteria workers have been divided between the high school and middle school cafeterias to assist with the influx of students,” said Walker.
Again, no bats were visible on Wednesday, January 18th but plans are to keep transporting students for at least three more days as extermination continues.
