Mitchell W. Maddox, Sr. was born on Tuesday, February 21, 1939, to H.B. and Vida Wells Maddox in Magee, Mississippi.
Mitchell had a passion for education and learning. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Master’s Degree from William Carey University. During his summer breaks from college, he would come back home to Magee. This is where he met his wife, Walterine. She stole his heart from the very beginning.
Mitchell taught math in the Biloxi school system for 35 years, as well as summer school and night classes for adult education. During his career, he was a representative of the Biloxi Teachers Federal Credit Union. Mitchell and Walterine were also involved in numerous community and church organizations throughout the years. He enjoyed attending work trips with Walterine, who was also employed by the Biloxi school district. His love for education and knowledge continued throughout his life. He could always be found reading educational articles and sharing interesting facts with his family and friends.
Mitchell and Walterine had a lifetime of happiness together. He often referred to her as his “doll baby”. The two of them were truly a perfect match for each other. They were blessed with one son, Mitchell W. Maddox, Jr. Mitchell had a special relationship with his son. The two enjoyed an abundance of father and son projects over the years. Mitchell also had a precious relationship with his daughter-in-law, Gail. She worked her way into his heart with her delicious cooking; Mitch’s favorite was her potato salad.
After retiring, Mitch and Walterine moved back to Magee and built a house. He spent much of his time gardening and completing projects. However, he enjoyed nothing more than spending time with the apple of his eye, his grandson Mitchell W. Maddox III (Trevor). Mitch often referred to him lovingly as “sport”. Mitchell was also extremely proud of Trevor’s wife, Carley. He greatly appreciated her nursing expertise and servant’s heart and was honored to have her as part of his family.
Mitchell loved the Lord and was baptized in Okatoma Creek as a part of Beulah Baptist Church at an early age. His faith in Christ was of great importance to him and a cornerstone for all he did in life. He lived a very blessed life, always prioritizing God and his family. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, H.B. and Vida Wells Maddox, aunt, Jewel Ates, and uncle, H.P. Ates.
He is survived by his loving wife, Walterine Hill Maddox; son, Mitchell W. Maddox Jr.; daughter-in-law, Gail Maddox; grandson, Mitchell Willis Maddox III (Trevor); and granddaughter-in-law, Carley Maddox.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Tutor Funeral Home in Magee, MS, from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM. Rev. Buddy Keyes will officiate the service at 2:00 PM in the Tutor Chapel with interment to follow in Sharon Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Stanley Eaves, Steve Eaves, Mike Taylor, Josh Maddox, Michael Allen, and Patrick Zila. Honorary Pallbearers are Mitchell Maddox, Jr., Mitchell Maddox III, Dempsey Sullivan, and Daniel McAlpin.

Arrangements are entrusted to Tutor Funeral home of Magee.
