Week 4 was rough for Mississippi’s football teams. Some losses were expected, and some just shouldn’t have happened. But at the end of the day, it’s football. So, let’s take a look at what all happened Saturday.

#15 Ole Miss 10, #13 Alabama 24

Ole Miss went to Tuscaloosa Saturday, looking like they finally had what they needed to kill Alabama’s 7-game win streak over the Rebels. Alabama has had some hard times, including a loss to Texas and barely easing by South Florida. Ole Miss looked strong in the first quarter, taking a 7-0 lead before letting Alabama get on the board by way of two field goals. Coming out of halftime, it was evident that the Tide was ticked.

About four minutes into the 3rd, Alabama took their first lead in the game on a field goal for the 9-7 lead. This was then followed by a Jalen Milroe touchdown pass to Jalen Hale and a successful two-point conversion to give Bama the 17-7 lead. Ole Miss would gain on the Tide a little more with a field goal to make a Rebel victory only a touchdown and 2-pointer away. However, things didn’t happen that way. Alabama was able to score again and hold Ole Miss back to win the game 24-10.

Mississippi State 30, South Carolina 37

In a thrilling cross-divisional SEC matchup, the Bulldogs went to Columbia, South Carolina, to take on the Gamecocks. South Carolina has gotten off to a slow start in 2023 and came close to beating Georgia in week 3. State has done well out of conference but took a beating from LSU in week 3. South Carolina and Mississippi State have always been very similar teams. They play tough teams every year and can beat these tough teams. It is surely a shootout anytime the Bulldogs and Gamecocks meet. This was no different Saturday evening.

South Carolina took an early 7-0 lead, but State’s defense was able to keep up and keep it 7-0 going into the second quarter. However, the heat was on in the second and both teams fought back and forth, giving and taking points. At the half, the Gamecocks held a 20-17 lead over the Bulldogs. South Carolina came out tired and let the Bulldogs put 10 to their own 7 up on the board to make it a 27-27 game. Everything would all come down to the crucial 4th quarter. Quickly, South Carolina racked up 10 on the Bulldogs to give the Gamecocks a 37-27 lead. With two minutes left, State would only be able to kick a field goal to give the Gamecocks a 37-30 win.
