The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) continues to investigate the recent outbreak of hepatitis A virus infections in Mississippi. A sharp increase in Mississippi hepatitis A infections began in April, primarily affecting drug users, the homeless, persons who are incarcerated or were recently incarcerated, and men who have sex with men. As of September 9, 46 hepatitis A cases had been confirmed, 63 percent of which resulted in hospitalization. Cases have been confirmed in 23 counties statewide.
To help control the spread of hepatitis A infection, MSDH staff have administered hepatitis A vaccinations to high risk populations over the last several months, with more than 1,000 vaccinations given to date. |
