Kathy Gibson’s Art class does projects each year for Magee High School. This year the students decorated a tree with paper cranes.
This is a Japanese legend that is told. If fold one thousand paper cranes you will be granted one wish. A young girl in Japan, Sadako Sasaki, who was exposed to radiation from the bombing of Hiroshima was dying from radiation poison. She was twelve and had started folding cranes but only done 664 before she died. The other children of Japan took up her efforts and folded the remaining cranes.
The folding of the cranes became a symbol for peace on earth. A statue of Sasaki is placed at Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Many of her cranes have been placed in museums in honor of her and her efforts for peace worldwide.
Ms. Gibson is a very talented Art teacher and Magee is very fortunate to have her as a teacher.
