The Mendenhall Elementary Media Center held a Scholastic Book Fair during the week of April 23-April 27, 2018. This is such a highlight of the student’s year, and a way to celebrate the end of testing! The students had hundreds of books to choose from for their reading enjoyment. All of the 600 students were able to attend the book fair if they wanted to shop for books. A grandparent-shopping day was held on Monday, and boy, did the grandparents come and shop! It was standing room only in the media center. The PTO provided some snacks for our busy shoppers.

Mrs. Tracey Crawford, the school librarian, organized the book fair. She said, “This year the selection had a wide variety on all reading levels and themes; our sales were excellent, and we have continued to put hundreds of books in the hands of children at MES. The quality of books available makes such a difference. We were able to meet our goal again this year. The theme of “Paws for Books” was a great pull-in to get the students into the reading mood. Scholastic continues to promote reading success. All monies earned will be utilized to purchase new books, DVD’s, and equipment for the library.”

The weeks prior to the book fair, the students viewed a DVD promoting the new and more popular books of the fair. The students seemed to really like the books, Dog Man and Cat Kid by Dav Pilkey, Dolphin Summer, and Purrmaids. Mrs. Crawford’s upper book pick was The Silver Mask by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare. Mrs. Crawford’s lower book pick was The Magician’s Hat by Malcom Mitchell. Mrs. Crawford heard both Dav Pilkey and Holly Black speak at the Children’s Book Festival at USM in Hattiesburg this past April.

Our students are already looking forward to another book fair in 2019! Volunteers are always welcome. This year several different organizations helped volunteer: MES PTO members, past PTO members, wonderful parents, and Delta Kappa Gamma members. I definitely couldn’t do it without their help.

The Mendenhall Elementary School Library hosted a Scholastic Book Fair that kicked off with a “Grandparent’s Event”. Over 50 families attended this event!

While attending the Children’s Book Festival in USM’s Hattiesburg campus, Mendenhall Elementary Librarian, Mrs. Tracey Crawford was able to meet Dav Pilkey, the author of the very popular children’s series, Captain Underpants and Dog Man. His books were selling quickly at MES’s book fair last week!
