Alexander Hamilton. I’d ask about the clandestine meeting he had with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison during which they agreed to move the U.S. Capitol to just outside of Virginia. Hamilton wanted the new country to assume the debt of all of the states in order to establish a treasury to obtain international credit. Jefferson and Madison pushed back because the southern states were prosperous and productive while the other states were straddled in debt. They questioned why they should fund the others’ debt. They proposed moving the U.S. Capitol to Virginia so that they can stay close to home to oversee their plantations. I’d want to know the gist of the conversation that led to the compromise. What exactly was the back-and-forth discussions? CLASSIC COMPROMISE! Our political leaders today have forgotten how to do that.
