Meistersingers Civic Chorus Presents an American Portrait March 5

Spring 2023 marks the beginning of a new season and a new era for the Meistersingers, Hattiesburg’s Civic Chorus. Artistic Director Dr. Joel Dunlap will conduct “An American Portrait” on Sunday, March 5 at 3 p.m.  at Westminster Presbyterian Church, in Hattiesburg. Admission is free with donations appreciated.

The Meistersingers, Hattiesburg’s Civic Chorus, has grown into an accomplished ensemble, recently showcasing its talents in Mississippi, New York, and London. The Meistersingers celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary last summer with the Brahms Requiem, a farewell concert led by conductor Joseph Wilkinson. Last fall, under the baton of Dr. Jay Dean, the chorus performed Handel’s Messiah to sold-out audiences in Hattiesburg and Natchez.

This year, the Chorus is happy to build on its legacy by welcoming Dr. Joel Dunlap to the podium.  A native of Long Beach, Mississippi, Dunlap heads the choral area and supervises graduate studies in music at William Carey University.

Dunlap stated, “We are excited to offer the first concert of the 2023 season to our Hattiesburg community. This program is a collection of choral works by some of our country’s most beloved composers and arrangers.”

The concert features a broad range of musical settings, from the rollicking Nelly Bly to the inspiring Spiritual Ride On, King Jesus, and ending with Homeland, a glorious tribute to patriotism.

“As the new Artistic Director of the Mississippi Meistersingers, I am honored to share the stage with this elite choral ensemble,” Dunlap continued. “In an effort to expand our performance opportunities, the group has begun planning an international concert tour of Italy for 2024.  There are great things in store for the Meistersingers.”
