The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will dedicate a section of Highway 48 in Amite County as the Taurean Harris Memorial Highway next week, according to Transportation Commissioner Tom King.

The dedication ceremony will take place at the Cotton Gin Meeting Hall located at 395 Gillsburg Road in Liberty at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2. Members of the media are invited to attend.

The 2016 Session of the Mississippi Legislature designated a segment of Mississippi Highway 48 in Amite County beginning at its intersection with East Jerusalem Road and extending westerly to its intersection with West Jerusalem Road in Amite County as the Taurean Harris Memorial Highway.

After being born in Georgia and growing up in New Orleans, Harris’ family moved to Liberty where Taurean would graduate from Amite County High School. In 2003, Harris decided he wanted to serve his country and enlisted in the military after graduation.

Taurean was assigned to the 202d MI Battalion, Task Force Lightning 513th MI Brigade, and Bagram Airfield Afganistan. He was killed in action from hostile fire on August 2, 2007 near Kalagush, Afganistan.

“MDOT is honored to dedicate this section of highway to Sgt. Taurean Harris,” Commissioner King said. “This memorial will remind all of us who travel this section of roadway in Amite County of the sacrifices made by Sgt. Harris.”

MDOT will erect and maintain appropriate signs on this designated segment of highway in memory of Sgt. Taurean Harris.
