Road projects continue moving forward in southwest Mississippi
MCCOMB, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) continues moving forward with multiple projects throughout southwest Mississippi.
“MDOT’s goal remains the same for every project throughout Mississippi: improve driver safety,” said Commissioner Tom King, Southern Transportation District. “Whether it’s an overlay or a bridge repair we want to ensure each project is benefiting the traveling public, from safety to quality of life.”
Bridge preservation project on U.S. Highway 84 in Covington County
A $1.8 million project to preserve a bridge on U.S. 84 at the Okatoma Creek is wrapping up in Covington County. This project was awarded to Midway Construction, of Roxie.
This project slightly realigned the creek channel and lined it with the riprap. Repairs were also made to the concrete shafts under the bridge. The objective was to prevent erosion of the shafts supporting the bridge.
The bulk of this project has been completed with minor adjustments remaining.
Bridge replacement project on State Route 198 in Marion County
An $8.9 million project to replace two bridges on SR 198 is beginning in Marion County. This project was awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction, Inc., of Columbia.
Currently the construction signs are in place and the roadway has been closed. Crews will begin demolition of the northern bridge first then begin replacement work. The project is expected to be complete around winter 2022.
Multiple overlay projects throughout southwest Mississippi
In Franklin and Lincoln counties, a $7.2 million overlay project is nearing completion on U.S. Highway 84. This project was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen, Inc., of Brookhaven, and stretches from the Lucien railroad bridge to U.S. Highway 51.
Currently, crews have completed repaving the entire surface of the road. Only the final striping of the roadway remains. The project is expected to be completed in the next couple of weeks.
On State Route 184 at Silver Creek in Lawrence County, paving is underway for a $1.1 million overlay project. This project was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen. Work is expected to wrap up in the next several weeks.
In Marion County, a $3.8 million overlay project continues on U.S. 98 from the Walthall county line to State Route 35. This project was awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders, LLC, of Laurel. The estimated completion date is fall 2020.
In Amite County a project to overlay eight miles of State Route 584 from State Route 24 to Bates School Road is underway. This $1.4 million project was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen and is expected to be completed winter 2020.
In Wilkinson County a $2.4 million overlay project continues moving forward. This project was awarded to W.E. Blain & Sons, Inc., of Mount Olive, and stretches for five miles from U.S. Highway 61 to State Route 563.
The majority of the work has been completed, and final striping remains. This project is expected to be completed fall 2020.
