MDOT makes progress on southwest Mississippi projects

MCCOMB, MISS. – Commissioner Tom King, Southern Transportation District, has announced updates to several Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects in southwest Mississippi.

“Infrastructure needs in southwest Mississippi are wide-ranging, and I’m proud of the projects completed and progress made,” said Commissioner King. “Additional funding on the federal and state level has translated to greater investment in the safety and efficiency of our state’s roads and bridges. We look forward to making more improvements in 2023.”

Overlay, intersection improvements on U.S. 49 in Simpson County
A $17.2 million project to overlay 10 miles of U.S. 49 from Magee to Mendenhall and to make intersection improvements on U.S. 49 from Goodwater Rd. to First Ave. is underway. Crews are working in the medians currently, and mainline paving should begin in spring. This project is expected to be completed in summer 2024.

This project was awarded to APAC – Mississippi, Inc. of Richland.

Mill, overlay project on U.S. 61 in Adams County
A project to mill and overlay approximately eight miles of U.S. 61 from Kingston to St. Catherine Creek in Adams County is underway. Mainline paving has been completed and work is taking place on crossovers and shoulder gravel. Guardrail replacement and roadway striping remain to be completed.

This $8.5 million project was awarded to APAC and is expected to be completed in summer 2023.

Overlay of U.S. 84 in Franklin County now complete
An overlay project covering eight miles of U.S. 84 from the Adams County line east to Chambers Rd. is now complete in Franklin County. The $5.8 million project was awarded to APAC.

Mill, overlay of State Route 149 in Simpson County to begin soon

A $4.7 million project will soon begin to mill and overlay approximately 11 miles of State Route 149 from Mendenhall to north of Braxton in Simpson County. Mainline paving will begin in the spring. This project was awarded to APAC.

Mill, overlay of U.S. 98 (Pressley Blvd.) in Pike County near completion
A project to mill and overlay approximately two miles of U.S. 98 (Pressley Blvd.) from I-55 East to U.S. 51 is wrapping up in Pike County. Paving is complete and striping work is near completion.

The $2.3 million project was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen, Inc. of Brookhaven and is expected to wrap up in winter 2023.

Slide, erosion repairs on U.S. 61 in Adams County
Slide and erosion repairs are underway on U.S. 61 approximately 0.9 miles north of Kingston Rd. in Adams County. Earthwork and drainage system work continues on the first of three project sites.

This $2.9 million project was awarded to Dozer, LLC of Natchez and is expected to be completed summer 2023.

Overlay on State Route 28 in Smith County now complete
An overlay project on 11 miles of State Route 28 in Smith County from the Simpson County line to the Jones County line is now complete. The $5.4 million project was awarded to APAC.

Mill, overlay projects in Lincoln County now complete
A $2.8 million mill and overlay project on State Route 184 and State Route 583 in Lincoln County is now complete. The project covers two portions of SR 184 stretching two miles from U.S. 84 to U.S. 51 (Natchez Ave.) and five miles from the beginning of state maintenance near Brookway Blvd. to U.S. 84 (Monticello Street). State Route 583 was milled and overlayed from U.S. 84 to the end of state maintenance.

This project was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen, Inc.

Mill, overlay project on State Route 43 in Lawrence County

A mill and overlay project recently began on State Route 43 in Lawrence County from the Jefferson Davis County line to County Road 43A. Currently, base failures are being repaired in the roadway, and mainline asphalt paving will follow. This $2.2 million project was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen, Inc. and is anticipated to be completed this spring.

Highway work zones are meant to protect the traveling public and highway workers on the side of the road.
