JACKSON, MISS. – As prom season approaches, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is teaming up with the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) and the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services (MDRS) to encourage safe driving habits and educate students on the potentially dire consequences of poor choices made on prom night by asking drivers to Please Return On Monday (PROM).
Prom is a memorable rite of passage for many high school students, but with the festivities, the risk of accidents increases, particularly with inexperienced drivers on the road. The excitement and celebrations surrounding prom can sometimes overshadow the importance of safe driving practices. However, it is crucial to remember that a single reckless decision could have life-altering consequences.
“We want all students to have a memorable and enjoyable prom experience, but above all, we want them to return home safely,” said Brad White, MDOT Executive Director. “We cannot emphasize the importance of making responsible decisions behind the wheel enough. Let’s make sure everyone returns to school safely on Monday.”
To promote safe driving practices during prom season, MDOT offers the following tips:
- Plan ahead. Make transportation arrangements in advance if necessary.
- Avoid distractions. Put away cell phones and other distractions while driving.
- Buckle up. Ensure everyone in the vehicle wears a seatbelt.
- Stay sober. Avoid alcohol or any substances that impair your ability to drive safely.
- Stay alert. Be aware of your surroundings and anticipate the actions of other drivers.
