The Mississippi College men’s and women’s tennis teams were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as the 2016 Academic Awards were announced on Thursday (July 21).
More than 4,200 scholar-athletes were recognized across all divisions, along with over 700 all-academic teams.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2015 and spring 2016).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1) be a varsity letter winner, 2) have a grade-point-average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
The Lady Choctaws finished 2016 with an 8-10 record, which included a dramatic 5-4 win over rival Delta State on April 7th.
The women’s team earned the ITA All-Academic Team award, while juniors Christa Owen and Courtney Schrock were joined by sophomores Sofia Gonzalez-Carrera, Brenna Keller, Karly Matthews and Katie Reid as ITA Scholar-Athletes.
The Choctaws went 16-10 in 2016, including a 6-3 Gulf South Conference record that saw them finish 4th in the standings. They would advance to the semi-finals of the NCCAA Tournament in Mobile to close out the season.
The men’s team earned the ITA All-Academic Team award, while sophomores Sanders Barrick, Petar Damjanovic, Jose Rodrigo Gonzalez, Lucio Menezes and Joan Valy were joined by freshman William Clausen as ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC is currently in transition to Division II and the Gulf South Conference, optimistically looking toward July when they will find out about clearing the final hurdle of transition and being full members for the 2016-17 academic year.
The athletic department sponsors 17 intercollegiate athletic programs: Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Football, Golf, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field, Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field and Volleyball.
