On Wednesday, June 8th, the Mississippi College basketball teams spent their morning at the Quisenberry Library in Clinton to participate in the summer reading program.

The City of Clinton provides a summer reading program that is titled “Ready, Set, Read!” and emphasizes sports-related speakers talking to middle school students from 10:00-11:00 am. The crowds usually range from 25-250 students.

Assistant men’s basketball coach Josh Brooks kicked off the summer program by talking to the students about what it takes to be a student-athlete and the importance of making good grades to play in college.

“I want to thank the Quisenberry Library and Kim Corbett for offering such a great program to the kids in our community,” said Brooks. “I enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time with such an energetic and respectful group of kids. It was a blast! I’m looking forward to doing it again next summer.”

Brooks also spent time talking about competition at the college level and the time and energy spent at practice. He also spoke about what sports MC offers and the camps that young kids can attend at MC during the summer.

The assistant coach entering his 8th year with the program after playing for athletic director Mike Jonesin the late ’90s took the children through some typical stretching and drills that college student-athletes go through at a practice.

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC is currently in transition to Division II and the Gulf South Conference, optimistically looking toward July when they will find out about clearing the final hurdle of transition and being full members for the 2016-17 academic year.

The athletic department sponsors 17 intercollegiate athletic programs: Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Football, Golf, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field, Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field and Volleyball.
