Paid Political Announcement
I would like to announce my candidacy for re-election for Mayor of Magee. It has been my honor and privilege to serve you as Mayor for the City of Magee. We have made great strides for the city in the last eight years.
I am a 1975 graduate of Magee High School, 1977 graduate of Co-Lin Community College, and a 1980 graduate of Millsaps College. I was a teacher/coach for nine years. I was in the business world for twenty-five years. My brother and I ran our family business that was started in 1953. We usually supervised about thirty employees.
The office of Mayor requires municipal experience. The Mississippi Municipal League comprises over three hundred villages, town, and cities in the state. You are required to complete certain courses to be considered a certified municipal official. I am certified in Basic Level, Advanced Level, and Professional Level. You also have to have certification in Workers Compensation and Municipal Liability. I have completed Basic and Advanced Levels. I was past chairman for the Education Committee of MML and past President of Central Mississippi Mayors Association. I am the only candidate that has completed all of this. Experience matters when it relates to the office of Mayor.
In 2017, the annual cities sales tax collection was $2.1 Million. In 2025, we should finish about $3 million. I believe this shows the strength of your local economy. There are currently approximately forty new houses being built in Magee. Some have already sold! In the last eight years, I believe we have added seventeen new business on the Highway 49 corridor. I get questioned about downtown Magee. We have added seventeen new business to downtown Magee. Our internet sales tax collection have gone to $525 thousand compared to $125 thousand eight years ago.
Our fire department is currently ranked a class five. There are only two volunteer fire department in the state with that rating. We have bought two modern fire trucks during my eight years. Our police salaries are some of the best in our state for cities our size. This enables us to keep good employees. We took our old YMCA with the help of Priority One Bank to create the Priority One Senior Citizens Building. Our elderly population has a place to go for meals, activities, etc.
Our Parks and Recreation has eighteen baseball/softball tournaments this year in addition to our local teams. This brings in a lot of revenue for the city. We have resurfaced our six tennis courts, placed two Olympic sized basketball courts at Marvin Jackson Park and have a new playground coming to Magee City Park. With the leadership of Ward Four Alderman Patrick Brown, we acquired 14 acres from the Simpson County Schools. These acres comprise Marvin Jackson Park, Five County Head Start school, and McLaurin historical school.
