Martha Sue Maddox, loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away on Monday, July 13, 2020, at the age of 89.
Sue was born on May 25, 1931, in Prentiss County, MS to James “Jim” Franklin Morris and Jettie Mae Watson Morris.
When Sue was a teenager, she contracted tuberculosis and subsequently spent time in the Mississippi Tuberculosis Sanatorium where she met her future husband and his family. She married James Willis Leach, and together, they had three children, Sherry, Donna and Butch. The Leaches lived on various military bases around the country and in Puerto Rico. When James Willis was stationed in Vietnam, Sue and her children came back to live with family in Magee, MS. James Willis died during his service in Vietnam. Sue handled this challenge in life the way she handled everything – with strength, dignity and faith in God. Her next adventure in life came when her sister-in-law introduced her to Sherley Maddox Jr. God knew their needs and before long, the single dad of two and the young widowed mother of three became a blended family. Sue and Sherley Maddox were married for 39 years. They were both devoted members of Sharon Presbyterian Church in Magee, MS.
Sue was the epitome of Southern grace and charm. She was always beautifully dressed. She loved to shop and could out-shop even the youngest of shoppers. She had a sense of style that was classy and timeless. She loved cooking for her family and eating together at the dinner table. She enjoyed being a homemaker and making the spaces around her beautiful and comfortable. Anyone who met her was instantly drawn to her sweet spirit. She will always be known for her devotion to family, her kindness, and her beautiful smile.
Sue is preceded in death by her father, James Franklin Morris, her mother, Jettie Mae Morris, her first husband, James Willis Leach, her second husband, Sherley Maddox Jr., her daughter, Donna Leach Yates, her son James Morris “Butch” Leach, and her brother, Frank Morris.
She is survived by her daughter Sherry Leach Landrum and son-in-law Charles Landrum, son-in-law Glenn Yates, daughter-in-law Eva Leach, and sons, Larry Maddox (Vicky) and Mike Maddox (Deanna), and by her grandchildren who lovingly call her Mama Sue…Jim Taylor (Catrina), Lorie Yates Newell (Cliff), Jason Yates (Joy), Allyson Thompson (Keith), Shannon Megaloff (Rick), Willis Leach, Candace Todd (Evan), Matt Maddox (Candy), Brandy Scott (Paul), Amber Kilcrease (Donny). She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren, her sisters Janette Sawyer and Becky Baldwin, several nieces, nephews and many other close family and friends.
She was loved by every person who knew her.
Due to state guidelines regarding gatherings, the visitation and service will be limited to family.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 17, 2020, from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM, at Sharon Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM at Sharon Presbyterian Church. Dr. Jim Taylor will officiate. Burial will follow in Sharon Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee is in charge of arrangements. 601-849-5031
