The Magee Adopt-A-School committee met Wednesday, October 17th at the Magee Elementary School. Chairman Lee Maddox conducted the meeting. Representatives of each school and local business personal were present. Plans are to engage a certain number of businesses to be assigned to each school to assist with needs. Four core businesses are needed per school with additional volunteers at each school. The next adopt a school meetings will be in November and February.
Magee High School
Dr. Tom Duncan discussed events at Magee High School. The Big Man on Campus program has been very successful. Volunteers for this program are always needed. A P-16 Council will be appointed. The Council will be composed of members of local community based organizations, members of local parent/teacher organizations, members of local student government/student council, local public official and community business leaders, as well as community members at large.
The Reality Fair is November 14th and volunteers are needed to assist at the 14 tables.
Dr. Duncan addressed specific needs: $164.00 to cover expenses for volley ball girls t-shirts. (Our volley ball team are #2 in the district and this is the first time a Magee team has made the playoffs,) Teachers typically receive and EEF card with over $300 to assist with needs for the classroom. Part time teachers cannot be issued a EEF card causing a lack of funds for needed class room supplies. Needed is a total of $300
The Gazebo in Trojan Park is in need of repair. Donated material and volunteers are needed.
Magee Elementary
Dr. Paul Lawrence, Principal of Magee Elementary, talked about the school’s B rating for the 2017-2018 year and his continued push to receive an A rating. Dr. Lawrence praised his teachers and all school personal for the work they have done and are continuing to do. Dr.Lawrence implements a program called a “Trojan Store” where students can purchase items with “Trojan Dollars” which are earned during the month. The cost to operate the store is about $400 per month. Help is needed to continue funding the store. Dr. Lawrence would like assistance in providing incentives for his teachers.
Magee Middle School
Ms Tracye Pierre, Principal of Magee Middle School, gave a very informative and energetic talk. Ms Pierre expressed a need for incentives for her students. She would like a fence around the new green space at Magee Middle. “Children need to be allowed outside…but safety is our number one concern.” The fence would provide the needed safety. Rewards for our teachers are needed. “We need to reward out teachers for the extra effort they give each and every day,” stated Pierre.
Attendance Officer
Mr. Patrick Flagg, attendance officer, informed the group that 286 students are home schooled. 859 students are in private school. “We want to be sure students are in school wherever they are,” said Flagg. The attendance officers are constantly working to keep students in school. There are 180 days of school. One item Mr. Flagg mentioned needed is belts! Boys are required to wear belts. Often male students do not have a belt or forget their belt. Mr. Flagg felt donated belts would be a great help.
Message from the prez note: I was so impressed with the upkeep of the new Magee Elementary. Often, in just one year a new building can be destroyed…this is not the case with Magee Elementary. There was no hall noise as students passed the library where we were meeting. The children are learning the 3 R’s…respect, responsibility, and readiness.
