Locating utility lines just got easier for the city of Magee, Miss.

Spire’s donation will help prevent damage to underground water lines.

Spire representatives gathered at City Hall in Magee, Miss., on Tuesday to present the city’s water department with an electronic line locating device. The locator, called a Vivax-Metrotech, will help Magee’s Public Works department locate underground water lines—safely and precisely.

“While discussing damage prevention efforts and future Spire projects in Magee, we discovered that the City’s water department does not use electronic locating devices,” said Alan Meyer, Spire manager of damage prevention. “Instead, they rely on the experience and knowledge of their employees to mark their facilities. So, we shared the option of electronic locating.”

Spire purchased the locating device and will train Magee’s water department employees on how to use the tool, damage prevention, locating practices and general information of the Mississippi Damage Prevention Law. Meyer said these efforts should go a long way toward avoiding future damages.

“The donation is important because we want to ensure that the city of Magee understands we want to be good stewards in damage prevention,” Alan said.
