Seventeen-year-old Dewuan Williams decided to bring Old River Road residents together for a community-wide clean-up day.  His goal was to clean up Old River Road from Pine Ridge Church to Highway 28, located in west Simpson County.

From L to Right Dewuan Williams, Tanisha Walker, Marie Moore, LaTonia Williams, Taronecia Graves, Terence Norwood.

Williams recruited family, friends and church members.  With the help of about fifteen volunteers, the crew collected 41 bags of trash over the five mile stretch of roadway.  Many residents joined in as the crew moved throughout the community.  Community elders stopped and expressed their gratitude for the effort.

An outpouring of support came from current residents and those who have moved away. The Pine Ridge M.B. Church, Keep Simpson County Beautiful and the Rho Iota Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. supported Williams’ initiative.

Williams has tentatively scheduled a second cleanup day for Saturday, October 24th beginning at 8:00 a.m.  “I believe that more people will be motivated to join us next time since they have seen us working.  We need as many people as possible on Old River Road, Coleman Road, Dixon Road, McLaurin-Pendleton Road and Louis Carter Road to join us that day.”

Williams is an 11th grade student at Mendenhall High School.  He is the son of Dwayne and LaTonia Williams.
