Simpson County School Board met Friday, February 3, 2017, for a special called meeting to appoint a member to fill the District 2 vacancy.
Vacancy was due to no candidates qualifying for the election.
Four individuals from district 2 submitted names to be considered for the appointed position.
Paul Arnold, Linda Curlee, Marvin Lee, and Lisa Reed were the name of the individuals interviewed Friday.
After lengthy interviews, votes were cast by the board.
Following the vote, no winner could be determined and the candidate with the fewest first place votes was eliminated and the top three candidates were voted on again. The vote led to a tie between two candidates.
The tie presented two options for the board to consider: (1) send the decision to the county election commission (2) the board president cast a tie breaking vote.
The board decided to allow the decision to be made within the school board.
The final decision became the tie breaking decision of the board president. Board President, Stacey Herrin, discussed her decision before casting vote. President Herrin’s decision was for Linda Curlee. Her decision as stated in the video below was due to the fact Ms. Curlee had defeated Mr. Lee in a prior election, and Ms. Curlee was already certified and CE hours that would not cost the county for a new position.
Ms. Herrin voted to appoint Linda Curlee in the position and the board approved the decision.
A special election will be held in November for the voters in District 2 to elect a new member to fill the seat.
