I know. That is a strange title. But give me a minute to explain. We all have those friends that just drain the life out of you every time you are around them. We fuss about them, we complain about them, not to them of course, we even sometimes avoid them. But, we need them.
If you are honest, we all have people that we feel energized by just being around them. People that we see as mentors in our lives. For me, it is a guy named Roy. We meet every Thursday morning for breakfast at a local fast food restaurant. We talk sports, family, politics, and most importantly, God. I need the mature faith that Roy has to be shared with me. By doing so, he fills me up. I then am able to be used up by others. That is called discipleship.
We have many places in the Gospels where Jesus went off by Himself to a quiet place. Why? Because He needed to meet with His Father to be filled up. He had 12 guys constantly use Him up. There are recorded instances where Jesus looks at the disciples and says, don’t you get it yet?!?! So back to the Father to get filled up to be used up. Eventually, the disciples did get it and they got used up by others. We call that the birth of the Church.
Back to me and us. Because I have a Roy in my life, I have to have someone to use me up. It is still hard to accept that at times, but look at it this way. The way I feel after I spend time with Roy is the same way someone feels after they spend time with me or with you. So, let them use you up. Just make sure you have a Roy to fill you back up again.
