“Leah’s varied skills and experience in media, communications, and the legal world give her a unique perspective in this role which will undoubtedly be an asset to the public and the Agency,” Secretary Hosemann said.

A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in English/journalism from Miami University of Ohio. After graduation, Smith reported on state and local politics at The Clarion-Ledger, and later served as Director of Communications for the State Institutions of Higher Learning under Commissioner of Higher Education Hank Bounds.

Smith received her Juris Doctor from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law in 2013. She worked for two years as a management-side labor and employment attorney at a large regional firm in Louisville, Kentucky. In 2015-16, Smith clerked for The Honorable Leslie H. Southwick on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Smith lives in Jackson with her husband, Solon Brown Smith III of Greenville, Mississippi.

All future press inquiries should be directed to Smith at leah.smith@sos.ms.gov or (601) 359-6349.
